In case of a large number of applications, students who will pass the selection based on the submitted documents will also be invited to take part in a remote written test, possibly followed by an interview. The dates of the remote written test will be communicated to the admitted students via email.

In order to take the MSc courses, students must have an adequate knowledge of the English language, at least of level B2 as established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students can demonstrate to possess the required knowledge level either through a recognized international certification (see the list) of international certifications recognized by the University of Siena), or by passing a B2 level exam at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA).
After the enrolment in Siena, students having an international certification must present it to the CLA office and apply for recognition. The CLA is located in Piazza San Francesco 7, Siena (more details can be found in the related website).
For students requiring to pass the B2 exam, the University of Siena offers B2 level courses. Dates of the exams and timetables of the courses are reported in the CLA website. The timetable of the English courses is also included in the MSc courses timetable.
Students are strongly encouraged to pass the B2 exam as soon as possible, in order to be able to fruitfully take the MSc courses.

The master program aims at providing high-level competences for the formalization and the consequent mathematical analysis of problems arising from applied sciences and technologies, with a special focus on the analysis of big data systems and complex systems.
This is a 2-year graduate programme entirely taught in English, offered to both national and international students.
The program provides courses which complete the basic mathematical competences, covering all the main areas of Mathematics (Mathematical Logic, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Optimizations, Foundations of Mathematics). Then, the student has a choice of courses focused in areas where the support of advanced mathematical methods is fundamental in recent scientific researches and developing technologies.
These courses cover topics such as the theory of formal languages, discrete methods in Mathematics, the applications of data analysis, bioinformatics and information systems for understanding structures in big data systems and networks, the techniques for modeling, analyzing and simulating complex dynamic systems, discrete event systems and nonlinear control systems. The student is trained to the interaction with specialists working in the scientific and technological areas where the support of advanced mathematical tools is required.
The acquired skills include the ability of retriving methodological information from the advanced mathematical literature. Students interested in Education can complete the program with courses focused in the foundational and educational aspects of Mathematics.

More specifically, the areas which are more suitable to need the competences of mathematical specialists are those connected with financial data analysis, control and optimization of biological data systems, analysis and control of networks and information systems, image processing and cryptography, modeling of general patterns for artificial intelligence and man-machine integrated systems.
Graduates in Applied Mathematics can access to PhD programs in Mathematics, and also in the areas of Economics, Technologies and Natural Science, especially where the PhD programs requires a solid background of mathematical competences. Graduates in Applied Mathematics can access to graduate courses which enable to a career in educational institutions.
